April 12th Poem--NaPoWriMo--2 Haiku

forgotten iced tea
a wasp drinks from the backs
of drowned bees

plum-heavy, the tree
planted on our dog's plot
bittersweet harvest

  1. Our dog died just a couple weeks ago so I had a visceral response to these. Gorgeous work.

  2. I'm terribly sorry to hear about the death of your dog. I have had numerous pets throughout my life and I have loved each one like a sibling or a child (depending on my age at the time). The backyard at my dad's house has a substantial pet cemetery that includes everything from rats and rabbits to dogs and cats. There are even a few lizards, fish, frogs, and other little critters keeping watch over our family and living pets.

The dog in this particular poem was given to me for my 7th birthday. She was a tiny puppy when I got her and, it being the 80s, I wanted to name her She-Ra Princess of Power. My mom urged me to name her Bear because she looked like a little bear cub (and she knew I would regret the choice when puberty kicked in). I settled on Carebear. Bear for short.

Sadly, after 16 years of being the sweetest, most gentle, loving dog, she drown in our swimming pool while my Dad was out of town. My sister found her Mother's Day morning and called me, hysterical. After an emotional meltdown I wished my mom a Happy Mother's Day and spent the rest of the 100 degree day digging a grave.

Over the years we planted several trees and flowering plants on her grave but nothing would bloom. Then my dad tried planting a plum tree there and it's been thriving ever since. Sorry for the lengthy response. I guess I had a visceral reaction to your comment! Thank you for your kind words. And my deepest sympathies.

I'd love to hear about your dog if you feel like sharing.
